US presses for resumption of Russian gas exports to Europe via Ukraine

What the sources report

The US government has been pressing since September for Russian natural gas exports to Europe through pipelines crossing Ukraine to resume as soon as possible, the Wall Street Journal reports.[1]

The initiative is part of diplomatic contacts toward an agreement that would provide for a halt to attacks on energy infrastructure in Russia and Ukraine.[2]

According to the newspaper's information, the idea put forward by US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff provides for sales through an American intermediary company, in order to bypass European sanctions.[3]

Under EU legislation, Russian gas markets must be phased out by the end of 2027, while leaders of the largest European countries say they do not want new energy dependence on Russia.[4]

Trilateral peace negotiations between the US, Russia and Ukraine are scheduled for mid-November in Abu Dhabi, while Russia so far rejects US efforts for an energy ceasefire.[4]
