Kotzamanis study: Fewer than 700,000 births in Greece in 2021-2030, compared with 920,000 in 2011-2020

What is happening

What the sources report

Estimates for 2026 point to 65,000 births in Greece.[1]

The data come from research by Vyron Kotzamanis, emeritus professor of Demography at the University of Thessaly and director of the Institute of Demographic Research and Studies (IDEM).[2]

From 1951 to 1980, births averaged around 150,000 a year, and in the 1990s they fell to 100,000.[2]

For the period 2021-2030, total births are estimated not to exceed 700,000, compared with 920,000 in 2011-2020.[1]

According to Mr Kotzamanis, the shrinkage is due to the decline in the number of children born to generations after the last decades of the 19th century, and the phenomenon concerns all developed countries.[3]

Where they differ

Newsbomb writes that in the post-war period and until 1980, births averaged 150,000 a year.[1]

Proto Thema and Makedonia place this period in the 1951-1980 range.[3][2]
